I've written for the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society since 1986; and - during that time - ten years for the American Federation of Herpetoculturists Vivarium Magazine. While I included some of the many strange stories received, I also tried to document trends in amphibian and reptile research and saw when I was coding these for the web that the first World Congress of Herpetology (1989), the first report of chytrid fungus (1992) was noted as well as the passing of the Golden Toad in Costa Rica, my first email (1994), my first bigwall (November 1997) and many other milestones, both personal and global were noted. Because the editors did not save electronic copies, the author has edited and posted the originals. Therefore, these files may not be identical to what appeared in print.

I was inspired to post these on the web because of receiving inquiries from people including one which read, "Have you ever written anything about Tokay Gekkoes [sic] ? Because if you have, send it all to me as quickly as you can." Since the web crawlers have done their work, everything I ever published in CHS or AFH, except the present year, is indexed and available to a worldwide audience.

When I first started my column, I also started translating the scientific names as a hobby. Years later, when HTML came alone, I published Names of the Reptiles and Amphibians of North America: translations of the scientific names, list of common names, biographies of those honored, citations of original descriptions and other information on my website.

In 2003, a senior editor at Firefly Books called and asked me to write a book about frogs of the world. You can click on the link at the upper corner of this page to see the book - and read inside a bit - at Amazon.com.
